Please note, the following itinerary is for guidance only and subject to change depending on the season and group’s needs and wishes, but all the following activities will take place some time during the week.
On arrival you will be transferred to your accommodation, Villa Spiros in Laganas. Famed as the home of the sea turtle Caretta Caretta, Laganas will be your base. You will have time to unpack, and settle in and maybe enjoy a quick swim before you enjoy a homemade meal with your hosts.
Later, that evening you will meet your photography tutor and guide. He will outline the wonderful things there are for you to discover. The voyage into the world of optical magic starts with a presentation of the work of great photographers, for inspiration and fresh ideas. You will discuss the program to ensure your aims are covered and work out an itinerary to make best of your time.
Rest of the evening at leisure. We can recommend nearby beach front tavernas and seaside bars for you to enjoy a relaxing yet wonderful time.
After breakfast, meet your photography tutor and explore the picturesque fishing port of Agios Sostis with the impressive Cameo island and the Turtle island, lying peacefuly as a backdrop in Laganas bay. Today’s most important aim is to enjoy yourselves and for that to show in your pictures.
Next, make your way to Keri village, with the magical sea and mountain views. There, you may discover nature’s most beautiful creations through your photographic lense.
Later, back at the villa, where you can swim at the famous sweeping Laganas bay, with its shallow, crystal clear water and if you are lucky, you may find yourself swimming alongside the large, graceful loggerhead turtles. Sun beds are plentiful if you just want to relax and lots of beach tavernas for lunch.
In the evening, enjoy a delightful train ride to Bohali, the highest part of Zakynthos town. You will visit the Venetian castle built in 1478, you will be guided to Razis traditional perfume laboratory, you will walk through the cobblestone blooming streets of historic Bohali village, you will relax and enjoy a drink or a light dinner over panoramic views of Zakynthos town far below, the port and the Ionian Sea.
After breakfast, travel a short distance to one of the most important nesting grounds of the sea turtle Caretta-Caretta, the Heavenly Kalamaki Beach. Turtle nests are scattered all along the golden sands, protected by little cages, and watched over by passionate volunteers from the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, who are always happy to share all their expertise on the subject of the turtles, just ask.
Just a little way out to sea the secluded uninhabited Islands of Pelouzo, Cameo and the Turtle Island, provide a stunning backdrop to a spectacular setting. Time, now to truly unwind and enjoy a heavenly afternoon. Swim, try a spot of snorkeling to see if you can spy a Caretta-Caretta, enjoy a beach picnic, among the relaxing sounds and aromas of the Ionian Sea. Simple, yet wonderful!
In the afternoon, with your photography tutor, explore the hidden treasures of the north part of the island, a paradise of natural beauty. The drive alone is magnificent, with green slopes all around and the clear turquoise, Ionian Sea as a backdrop.
The journey is planned so that you get a local’s feeling for the island, avoiding the spots most tourists visit. You will explore paths off the beaten track, known only to locals. We will take a photo tour through the traditional picturesque villages of Koiliomenos and Agios Leon, where you will have the chance to meet authentic local people living in fairytale neighborhoods, and at Porto Vromi you will finally capture the most beautiful Greek sunset.
After breakfast you may like to explore the little shops alongside Laganas main road, or enjoy a relaxing swim at the golden sands of Laganas bay, laying only 500m, from the villa. At lunch time, enjoy a lovely home cooked meal together with your hosts.
In the evening, meet your photography tutor and discover Pikridiotisa, a traditional Zakynthian neighborhood with the blooming cobbled stone streets, the humble houses and the happy locals living a creative yet stress free life. This is located at the very top of Zakynthos town, with magnificent views over the town’s twinkling lights, the harbor and out to sea. This spot, as well as the harbor down below with the yachts and locals’ fish boats make the perfect spot to reveal the magic of this beautiful island, hidden well back in its history and rich culture with the help of your photographic lenses of course.
That evening at Villa Spiros, you will have a photo critique session, over drinks and seasonal fruit. The best way to improve on your composition is to look at your pictures and analyze the results (rather than the intention!); see what is missing and what should not have been included.
Today, spend the day at leisure, or you may treat yourself to today’s exclusive optional excursion. There are plenty of choices for activities including cooking, gardening, photography tours, hiking, cycling, horse riding, swimming, massage and spa, visit Kafalonia island, Athens or Olympia or let us know if we can help you arrange something specifically for you, we will be happy to.
Wake up to another fun and exciting day.
From Agios Sostis fishing port start a once in a lifetime boat trip experience towards the breathtaking west coast of Zakynthos with the secluded coves, crystal clear water, dramatic blue caves to arrive at mesmerizing Shipwreck bay. This is what we call a natural eye delight. If the weather is too windy for the boat, we will drive north and still be able to admire the shipwreck from the viewing platform set into the cliff top.
In the evening, join your hosts for a meal and enjoy the traditional pita souvlaki with either pork or chicken skewer at Villa Spiros gardens.
Today after breakfast, together with Antonio, drive to Lithakia village and see the unique perennial olive trees, truly amazing natural sculptures. Then visit Aristeon Olive Press. At the olive oil museum, learn how the humble olive becomes liquid gold the precious oil that gives Zakynthians their lust for life. See the display of machinery from the old days before touring the modern factory with your guide. At the end is a chance to taste a variety of extra virgin oils on village bread and buy their products.
In the evening, dress up for the farewell party at “Dennis”, our favourite tavern in Lithakia village. There, we will enjoy a traditional Greek celebration, with great BBQ and plenty of local wine and of course Greek live music and dancing. Enjoy the sounds of bouzouki while learning how to dance syrtaki.
Phew! A grand finale to a great week!
This morning enjoy a lovely traditional breakfast, maybe a walk to Laganas Main Street for last souvenir shopping, or a stroll to Laganas beach to take a last dip.
Your driver will take you to the airport or port in good time for your departure.
By now you will truly be feeling at home here, Zakynthian through and through, and definitely like a member of our family.
